Church of Saint Anthony

The small Church of St. Antonio Abate is located near Porta Catania. Built in about 1330 it was completely destroyed by bombing in 1943, after which it was rebuilt using the same remaining rubble. The Church of St. Antonio Abate, protector of animals, shows a facade dominated by the beautiful portal in white limestone topped by a pointed arch. White limestone are also the lintel and the two doorposts. At the sides of the portal there are two small windows decorated by a closure consisting of perforated foil. As well as the other two small windows on the north side and two on the south side. A special decoration that is noticed immediately. In the upper left of the facade there is a small bell tower, very characteristic. Entering inside the church, whose environment is just one compartment, you immediately notice on the left a small niche made of gray marble Taormina. Within this niche it is collacata the Abata St. Anthony statue made of wood, with a miter on his head, with his right hand in the act of blessing and with the pastoral staff in his left. Since 1953 the St. Antonio Abate church is home to a permanent crib in which are represented some sites of Taormina and nativity scenes, all made with cork cubes.
