The Church of Santa Caterina is located in Largo Santa Caterina, on the famous Corso Umberto through the center of Taormina. The church, in Baroque style, was built in the first half of 1600 on the ruins of the Odeon which, in turn, rested its foundations on the ruins of an ancient greek temple erected probably in honor of the goddess Aphrodite. On the facade overlooking the beautiful portal in pink stone of Taormina. All other openings, however, are made of Siracusa stone. Just above the portal is based a niche which houses the statue of St. Catherine, built by Paolo Greek in 1705. Entering the church we see now, on the right, the marble statue of the Holy dating back to 1493. The statue was formerly preserved in the Capuchin church (St. Catherine’s Church outside the walls). The church has a single nave. Inside there is a crypt, brought to light during the restoration work carried out in the 70s, in which were buried people of high social status. During the stages of restoration it was also found some ruins of the walls dating back to greek-Roman and still preserved inside the church. The Church of St. Catherine was completely restored and reopened to the celebrations November 25, 1977, after 40 years in which the structure, in a complete state of uncertainty, remained closed.
